We’ve built a nature playscape on our playground!
It’s not that our playground wasn’t already great – it was! Children love our swings and slides and climbers; all key pleasures of early childhood. But children also need trees, and grass, and mud holes, and rocks – the nature-based components that research tells us calm and center children, foster emotional development, and connect children to the wonder of the world outdoors.
Thanks to a generous donation, your child can now find new, nature-focused playspaces in the area surrounding our trike track, with open-ended play opportunities that promote creative, cooperative play.
Grassy hillocks will send your child up and down mountains in his imagination. A play stage with pulleys and flags and a percussion center with pipes, pots, pans and bells will make room for music and drama. A new sandbox, complete with kitchen area and stainless steel sinks, sits side by side with a boulder-lined rock pit. Native flowers bloom along the western border, fronting a secret path for adventure play.
Our students are really enjoying their new nature based playground! Feel free to check it out with your child any time!

Be sure to come in to NFCNS on Saturday January 9th for our fabulous messy morning and open house, Saturday Splat from 9:30 to 11 am. Bring your friends and neighbors, and dress for mess – ’cause we’re not messing around!
We’ve got basil, rosemary, dill, oregano, thyme, tarragon and chives in the garden, just waiting to be picked!
Back to school picnic on Saturday 9/19 on the lawn! The good news – looks like we’ll have a dry afternoon! The not-so-good news – the ground is likely to be wet. You may prefer chairs to blankets, and crocs and boots to sandals…
One other note – we will open the playground, and I know you will enjoy seeing some of the new nature play areas in action! However, there are 2 areas that we ask your help in keeping “closed” – the deck, while safe, is still unrailed, and the straw-covered area in the center of the trike track is off-limits until the turf comes in. The operative phrase? Just remind children to “stay on the road” if they head in either of those directions (thanks for that, Mrs. Wasikowski!). The rock pit, the sand box, the stepping stones and the sand kitchen, on the other hand, are open for play!
